Bielzy and Gottfried to Open Thursday, April 3, 2014

‘Bielzy and Gottfried’ will show as part of The Echo Theatre’s 2014 Playwriting Showcase April 3 through April 19 and is an original play by J. Omar Hansen a Theatre Professor at BYU-Idaho. This show is scheduled for a staged reading at the Midtown International Theatre Festival in New York this summer.

Hansen was inspired by medieval morality plays like “Everyman” and caused him to ask the question, “What if God and the devil did a morality play?” In answer to this question he wrote “Bielzy and Gottfried” Wherein Joshua Gottfried and Lucius Bielzy come together to present a series of short morality plays causing their audience to think about old familiar stories and make new discoveries of their own.

This contemporary play is an allegory dealing with issues that are not only real but relevant. The morality plays within this show explore such concepts as choice, free will, human frailty, suffering and hope without giving the audience the answers. Hansen teaches his students that “Great Literature asks the important questions, it does not answer them.”

Hansen’s intent was “to explore the duality of morality.” His hope is that it makes people examine the way they think about right and wrong. He wants audiences to “Rethink the old stories” and come away from this show asking themselves, “What do these stories mean to me?”

Erika is excited to perform with The Echo Theatre! Erika has performed in several theatrical productions in the past. She has recently been spending her free time with Desert Gypsy Dance Company. She’s excited to combine two of her favorite things; theatre and Middle Eastern dance.

Geminae is courtesan in the house of Marcus Lycus and, if the name hasn’t given it away already, she has a twin. Erika is enthusiastic, loves what she does and has some pretty sweet moves. She has been great to have in our show.

Jakob Tice as Erronius

Once upon a time a geek from Delaware discovered theatre. So he came to study theatre at BYU and teaching at UVU (resume available on request!). Not being content with acting he joined The Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD) where he has been ‘killing it’ ever since. He married his lovely wife Melissa and is in the process of living happily ever after . . . as a geek.

Erronius is the next door neighbor who has been gone desperately searching for his children who were kidnapped by Pirates. Jakob is also crowed favorite as Erronius. He is our favorite too!

This is the last week of ‘A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum’ Don’t miss out on seeing this fantastic cast perform at The Echo Theatre.

Travis Wright as Hero

After two years of theatrelessness Travis is so glad to break this streak by being in his first show at The Echo Theatre. From Western Wyoming Community College, to Weber State University, and currently at UVU, Travis is studying to be a theatre professor. He owes his happiness and recent success to his wife Bri and beautiful baby girl Aria.
Travis does a fantastic job playing the part of Hero, who is completely enamored with Philia, the-courtesan-next-door, who has been sold to Captain Miles Gloriosus.

David Thorpe as Sennex

Native to Ohio, David transplanted to Utah to study film at BYU. David works as a freelance filmmaker in the Utah Film Industry and is a lover of old movies, rock & roll, and theatre. He is grateful to be a part of this hilarious production while working with such a fun cast and crew. He is a first time participant and a longtime fan of The Echo Theatre.

David does a spectacular job playing the role of Sennex, husband of Domina and Father of Hero. Sennex may or may not be experiencing a mid-life crisis in this show and David presents a fun take on his character and the situations he creates and finds him self in.

Picture Lennika Wright– Domina

Lennika will be graduating in December from BYU with a BA in vocal performance. Her favorite roles have been Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Hexe in Hansel and Gretel, and currently Domina in this production. She would like to thank her husband, John, her parents, her brother and Pandora Internet Radio-free Music.

Lennika plays the suspicious wife of Sennex, mother of Hero and daughter of a Roman General. Her salute in memory of her father may be one of my favorite parts.

Lennika has a beautiful voice. Seriously, you must hear it.

This is Michael’s first time on the stage, but that doesn’t stop him from going all out in his role as a Protean. Since he is already energetic and funny in real life, getting into character as a protean comes naturally. You can expect to see him in more shows in the
future. Long live The Echo Theatre!

Michael is hilarious. Seriously. This is his first play, which is hard to believe when you watch his performance.

Come see! TheEchoTheatre.com
